About Us ![]() • Overview of Maor High School • What does the curriculum include? • How are the classes formed? • Mainstreaming into “Regular” High School Classes • Extra-curricular activities and social mainstreaming Maor High School is SINAI’s high school for students with average or above average cognitive ability, but who experience academic difficulties. Maor is hosted within Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School (RKYHS), which is located in Livingston, NJ. Part of the beauty of Maor is how integrated many of our students become into the fabric of RKYHS and how well many of our students are received as peers by the RKYHS students. Maor High School is comprised of small classes, where our students receive individualized instruction. Teaching styles and techniques are matched to each individual student’s needs. In addition to the SINAI classes, many students benefit from mainstreaming into regular RKYHS classes, as described below. What does the curriculum include? Our core curriculum meets New Jersey state requirements for graduation. It includes Language Arts, Math, Science, History, Phys Ed, Art, Music & Computer Science In Judaic studies, areas of concentration include T'filla, Hebrew language, Jewish History, Halacha, Chumash, Navi, Mishna, and Gemara. In all subjects, teachers employ a multi-sensory approach which integrates the use of sight, sound, speech and touch. This approach reinforces meaningful learning. Skill based learning is woven into all content areas. Pupils who are college bound are afforded the opportunity to participate, with accommodations, in the PSAT, SAT and ACT college testing programs. They are also invited to meet with representatives from the colleges that send recruiters to RKYHS. A fully licensed guidance counselor is available on a regular basis to meet with our students individually and in small groups to discuss a variety of issues affecting them as learners and as teenagers. Classes range in size from three to eight students. Each class is divided into smaller educational groupings that are constructed by taking into account similarities in needs and learning styles, teacher recommendations, standardized testing, informal assessment, chronological age and maturity and skill level. Balance of level of student needs is another important factor. Each student receives an individualized educational program tailored for his or her needs. Mainstreaming into “Regular” High School Classes To the extent they are ready and able, Maor students are mainstreamed into regular classes at Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School. Each placement into a mainstream class is made on a careful, individual basis, as appropriate for the particular student. We collaborate closely with the administration and staff of RKYHS to help ensure the success of each mainstream placement. Extra-curricular activities and social mainstreaming Our students are integrated into the fabric of our host school, Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School. All students participate, together with the students of Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School, in the many nonacademic activities offered by RKYHS, including lunch, prayers, gym, sports teams, and clubs as appropriate. Our students have played significant roles in RKYHS school plays and assemblies. Our graduation is part of the RKYHS graduation, which is emblematic of the acceptance of our students as part of the overall RKYHS community. |
